LocalHarvest.org is an extensive web site that includes a directory of family farms all over the U.S. — with an emphasis on the Northeast and California — that sell their produce directly to the public. Listings can be searched by state, zip code or browsed alphabetically.
A great feature is a localized listing created by entering your zip code and selecting a mile radius. Over 80 listings were returned in the results for my zip code in Upstate New York.
But there is a lot more to the LocalHarvest.org site — not the least of which is access to the extensive Local Products database, with links to where you can find selected foods or products in your area.
LocalHarvest does not restrict its listings to organic producers only, since our mission is first and foremost to support small growers, and then to promote Organic agriculture.
Individual farm profiles include a description, location and contact information, details of crops, farm practices, u-pick and farm stand information and coming events.
Profiles also allow members to add images. Photos like the baby alpaca on the profile of Alpacas of Sunshine Farm of New Milford, Pennsylvania and the cashmere goats at
Bonny Venture in Mt. Sidney, Virginia help to make this a kid-friendly site. More farm photos can be seen here.
A useful, though brief, overview of organic food includes definitions for some common terms associated with organic food. LocalHarvest.org has been online since 2000.
